Writing styles can range from direct to flowery, and different contexts require different writing styles.
Plain Language Association International (PLAIN) is an organization that encourages copywriters to use what they call plain language. PLAIN believes that the intended audience should be able to easily read and understand pieces of writing. Learn more about plain language here.
Choose words carefully
Getting to the point quickly and concisely can help everyone, including people with Attention Deficit Disorder, people using screen readers, as well anyone who has difficulties reading. Using common and simple words appropriate for your audience ensures greater understanding.
Structure your ideas
Convey information in a logical and easy to follow sequence. Break up larger ideas into short paragraphs. Blocks of text more than three or four lines long can be discouraging for some readers.
Proofread
Make sure to double check all spelling, grammar, and information. Get someone else to look it over if possible. Different levels of proofreading are necessary for different contexts. For example a tweet might need a different level of proofreading than contact information.
